Five Points

Five Points is the student neighbourhood adjacent to the University of South Carolina campus, a dense cluster of bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and small businesses built around a five-street intersection. It is the most energetic part of Columbia on weekend nights and noticeably quieter during summer when students leave.

During the day, Five Points is good for a walk — there are independent bookshops, a number of well-regarded casual restaurants, and several coffee shops that make it easy to spend an afternoon. The neighbourhood hosts the St. Patrick's Day festival each March, one of the largest in the state.

A story
Five Points is named for the five-street intersection at its heart — a layout that has created one of the liveliest and most confusing pedestrian environments in Columbia since the neighbourhood grew up around the university in the early 20th century. The Hootie and the Blowfish Boulevard street sign acknowledges that the band formed here while its members were students at USC in the late 1980s.
