Columbia offers a mix of Civil War history, strong museums, and easy access to remarkable nature. The South Carolina State House and its cannon-ball-marked walls are the symbolic centre. The South Carolina State Museum in the old Columbia Mills building is one of the better state history museums in the South. Congaree National Park, 20 minutes southeast, is the real standout — old-growth floodplain forest that feels genuinely wild.
The Vista district and Five Points are the main social areas. For deeper history, the Mann-Simons Site and the Woodrow Wilson Family Home fill out the picture of who Columbia has been across different eras.
