Riverbanks Zoo and Garden

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, a mile west of downtown on the Saluda River, is consistently ranked among the best regional zoos in the United States. The 170-acre complex spans both banks of the river — the zoo occupying one side, a 70-acre botanical garden the other — connected by a pedestrian bridge over a dramatic river gorge.

The zoo is well-designed with naturalistic habitats, and the botanical garden is worth exploring even without the animals. The South Africa section, with lions, giraffes, and rhinos in a large open enclosure, is a highlight. Good for families; allow a full day.

A story
The zoo is built along both banks of the Saluda River — you cross a pedestrian bridge mid-visit to reach the botanical garden side. The river gorge below the bridge is a notable birding spot, and peregrine falcons have nested on the cliffs here. The 70-acre botanical garden was added in 1995 and includes one of the best collections of South Carolina native plants in the state.
