Parasailing, fishing, and kayaking on the Carolina coast

Hilton Head Island sits where tidal creeks, brackish estuaries, and the open Atlantic converge, making it one of the better spots on the South Carolina coast for getting on the water. Harbour Town, Shelter Cove Marina, and Palmetto Bay Marina all charter boats and rent equipment.

Parasailing over Calibogue Sound gives you a bird's-eye view of the island and is more accessible than you might think — operators take beginners daily. Wave runners and speed boats can be reserved at most marinas, but book ahead in summer when demand spikes.

Fishing is varied here. Inshore anglers cast from 19 miles of sandy beaches and tidal creeks for sea trout, flounder, and redfish. Offshore charters head toward the Gulf Stream for white marlin, dolphin (mahi-mahi), and sailfish. Fly fishing for Spanish mackerel and bluefish is popular in the sound.

Surfers and kiteboarders head to Folly Field Beach or the north end of the island where the waves have more energy. Scuba excursions depart daily from Harbour Town for reef and wreck dives in the warm local waters — you will need your certification card.
