The Old City is Knoxville's nightlife and music quarter — a cluster of streets just east of downtown lined with converted brick warehouses that house bars, live music venues, and casual restaurants. It has been the city's nocturnal centre since the 1990s and remains the best place to hear live music on a weekend night.
The density of venues in a short walk makes it easy to move between places over the course of an evening. The Preservation Pub, a converted Victorian building, is the neighbourhood's anchor: five floors of live music with bands playing simultaneously across multiple stages. The Birdhouse is a long-running venue for punk, metal, and indie. Most of the bars in the Old City stay open until 3am at weekends and there is an easy informality to the scene — no dress codes, reasonable prices, and a mix of students, locals, and people who have been coming here since the neighbourhood opened.
