The Memphis Botanic Garden in Audubon Park covers 96 acres with more than 20 themed gardens. The My Big Backyard children's garden is one of the most elaborate in the South. The Japanese garden, with its koi pond, stone lanterns, and carefully shaped plantings, is peaceful and well-maintained. The Rose Garden is impressive in May and June when the collection peaks. The sensory garden and the herb garden are smaller but thoughtfully designed.
The gardens are at their best in spring (April–May, when azaleas, tulips, and roses are in bloom) and in autumn (October, when the foliage turns). Summer is hot but the garden remains open; the Japanese garden's shade makes it more bearable than the open areas. Admission is modest. A concert series called Live at the Garden runs through summer, bringing regional and national acts to the outdoor amphitheater on the grounds.
