Memphis has a humid subtropical climate — hot, sticky summers and mild winters, with spring and autumn offering the most comfortable weather for walking the city. Spring, particularly April and May, is the prime season. The heat hasn't yet become oppressive, the azaleas are out, and Memphis in May turns the whole month into a festival. The Beale Street Music Festival runs across a weekend in early May, drawing major acts in blues, soul, rock, and country to Tom Lee Park on the river. The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, also in May, is the most serious gathering of competitive pit masters on earth — the smells alone are worth the trip.
Summer (June–August) is hot and humid, with temperatures frequently reaching the mid-30s Celsius. The city is fully functional in summer and the music scene doesn't slow down, but be prepared to spend time in air conditioning. Autumn brings relief, with September and October offering warm days and cool evenings, and the Mississippi Delta light takes on a particular golden quality that photographers appreciate. Winter is mild by northern standards — temperatures rarely drop below freezing — but the city slows considerably, and some outdoor attractions reduce their hours. The Memphis Grizzlies basketball season runs from October through April, which gives winter visitors something to do; FedExForum is a solid NBA arena and tickets are generally available. December brings the Liberty Bowl college football game to the city, a tradition going back to 1959.
