Sun Studio

Birthplace of rock and roll, still a working studio

The small storefront studio on Union Avenue where Sam Phillips recorded Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Roy Orbison in the 1950s. The original equipment is still in place and the studio still functions as a recording space. Tours run every hour and are led by guides who clearly love the material — the story of how Memphis produced rock and roll, country, and blues in one cramped room is told well here.

A story
On 5 July 1954, Elvis Presley recorded 'That's All Right' at Sun Studio during a late-night session. Sam Phillips had spent two days trying to get something usable from Elvis; the track that launched rock and roll was cut during an impromptu break.
