Lake Bastrop is a 900-acre reservoir north of town with parks on both the north and south shores. It is not wilderness, but it is useful: swimming, boating, fishing, camping, and picnic tables when the day is too hot for a long hike.
For travellers, the lake works best as an easy add-on to the Lost Pines rather than the main event. In summer, that easy swim can feel essential.
