Bastrop

Small Texas town on the Colorado River, framed by the unusual Lost Pines forest.

Bastrop sits about 30 miles east of Austin, where the Colorado River bends past an old Texas town square and an isolated forest of loblolly pines. Those pines are the reason to pay attention. The "Lost Pines" are separated by more than a hundred miles from the pine forests of East Texas, giving Bastrop a landscape that feels slightly misplaced in the best way.

The town works well as a day trip from Austin. Spend the morning hiking in Bastrop State Park or McKinney Roughs, then return to Main Street for the courthouse, brick storefronts, and a slow walk toward the river. Lake Bastrop adds swimming, fishing, and paddling when the weather is hot, which in central Texas is a large part of the year.

Bastrop is not trying to be grand. Its appeal is the mix of pine woods, river light, old downtown, and easy access from Austin without feeling like a suburb. Go in spring or fall if you can; summer is possible, but the heat will decide your pace.
