Palo Alto is the cleanest place to understand why Brownsville matters historically. The open grassland looks quiet now, but this was where Zachary Taylor's army and Mexican forces fought the first major battle of the Mexican-American War in 1846.
The visitor center gives enough context before you walk the battlefield trail. Go early or late in the day if you can; there is little shade and South Texas heat is not gentle.
