Amon Carter Museum of American Art

A first-rate collection of American art across two centuries, with particularly deep holdings in Frederic Remington and Charles Russell — the two artists who defined the popular image of the American West. The Western works on the lower floor are the obvious draw, but the upstairs galleries trace nineteenth- and twentieth-century American painting and photography (Stieglitz, Strand, Adams) at the same high standard.

The Philip Johnson building was renovated and extended by his protégé David Schwarz in 2001 and gives the collection plenty of breathing room. Admission is free.

A story
Amon Carter Sr., the newspaper publisher who founded the museum, was so committed to Fort Worth that he carried a packed lunch when business took him to Dallas because he refused to spend a nickel there.
