White Elephant Saloon

A classic Stockyards saloon — long wooden bar, tin ceiling, Texas longhorn skulls, country bands every night, peanut shells underfoot. The atmosphere is genuine rather than themed, and a Friday or Saturday night here is one of the easiest ways to see why Fort Worth still calls itself Cowtown.

Two-step lessons are sometimes offered in the early evening. The dance floor fills up by ten.

A story
The original White Elephant in downtown Fort Worth was the site of an 1887 shootout that killed the city's former marshal Luke Short and gambler Jim Courtright. The current Stockyards location is a 1976 revival, but the gunfight is re-enacted every year on the anniversary of Short's death.
