Chinati Foundation

Donald Judd's vast permanent art museum on the grounds of former Fort D.A. Russell.

The Chinati Foundation is Marfa's essential stop, a museum built around permanent large-scale installations rather than rotating white-room shows. Donald Judd founded it in 1986 on 340 acres of the former Fort D.A. Russell, giving art room to live with the desert light instead of fighting it.

The Judd concrete works sit outside, while Dan Flavin's fluorescent installations and works by other artists occupy old military buildings. Take a guided tour if you can; the scale, distance, and quiet are the point.
