Henkel Square

Henkel Square is the historic heart of Round Top, a collection of preserved 19th-century buildings centred on the original Fayette County district courthouse. The courthouse is a simple wooden structure, and its survival is remarkable in a state where such buildings typically fell victim to fire or were replaced by grander masonry successors.

The surrounding square includes period homes, a dogtrot blockhouse (Moore's Fort), and a Lutheran church. Together they give a vivid picture of what a small Texas German settlement looked like in the mid-1800s. The square is walkable and free to explore on foot; some buildings are open for tours at certain hours. The setting is particularly attractive in spring when the wildflowers are out.

A story
The buildings at Henkel Square were collected and moved here from across Fayette County by the Winedale Historical Society, starting in the 1960s. The county courthouse that anchors the square is genuinely rare — most Texas counties lost their original courthouses to fire, collapse, or replacement, but this one survived. It is one of the last of its kind in the state.
