Round Top

Tiny Texas Hill Country town known for its antiques fair and classical music institute.

Round Top is a small Texas town with a permanent population of around 90 people, but it has an outsized reputation in two areas: antiques and classical music. The twice-yearly Round Top Antiques Fair draws tens of thousands of visitors and has expanded to fill much of the surrounding countryside. The Round Top Festival Institute is a serious music conservatory and concert venue founded in 1971 by pianist James Dick, drawing international talent every summer.

The town sits in the Texas Hill Country, in Fayette County between Houston and Austin. The German heritage of the region is visible in the architecture and old church buildings. Henkel Square is a preserved collection of period homes around the town's historic courthouse, a rare survivor in a state famous for losing its county seats to fires and floods. The nearby Winedale Historical Complex preserves a group of early Texas German farmstead buildings.

The town is easily done as a day trip from Houston (about 90 miles) or Austin (about 75 miles), but it has good restaurants and B&Bs if you want to stay. During the antiques fair, accommodation for miles around books up months in advance.
