Round Top Antiques Fair

The Round Top Antiques Fair is held twice a year — in late March/early April and late September/early October — and transforms this tiny town and its surrounding countryside into one of the largest antiques markets in the United States. The fair has expanded far beyond Round Top itself: shows spread along US-237 through Warrenton, Carmine, and Shelby, covering a corridor of several miles.

The range is extraordinary: American country furniture, European imports, folk art, architectural salvage, vintage clothing, jewellery, and plenty of the merely decorative. Quality varies widely between shows and stalls. Serious buyers come early; browsers and bargain-hunters can find good things throughout the week. Expect crowds, heat (especially in spring), and traffic. If you are not visiting during fair week, the town is dramatically quieter but most of the permanent shops are still open.

A story
The antiques fair began in 1968 with a few dealers in a field. It has grown to encompass dozens of separate shows spread across several miles of the surrounding countryside, with over 3,000 dealers participating at peak events. During fair week, the population of Fayette County effectively multiplies — accommodation from Houston to Austin fills up, and some dealers earn more in a single week than in the rest of the year combined.
