The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts occupies an unusual building on the bank of the Concho River — a curved, earth-toned structure designed by Michael Graves that was built in 1999 on the site of the city's former water treatment plant. The building itself is one of the more architecturally distinguished things in West Texas.
The permanent collection focuses on American ceramics, one of the strongest collections in the country, alongside regional Texas art and rotating contemporary exhibitions. The ceramics collection spans functional pottery and decorative studio work from the 1900s to the present. Admission is modest and the museum is less visited than it deserves.
