About 30 miles east of Green River, off I-70 near Thompson Springs, Sego Canyon contains three superimposed styles of rock art: Barrier Canyon pictographs of tall, hollow-eyed figures; Fremont petroglyphs with horned headdresses; and later Ute scenes showing men on horses, painted after Spanish contact brought horses to the plateau.
The panels are right beside the road, well signposted, with a short loop walk. A few miles further on are the ruins of Sego, a coal-mining ghost town with collapsed stone buildings. The combination of ancient art and Western ruin makes a good half-day from Green River.
