Downtown

Salt Lake City's downtown is compact and walkable, built on the original grid laid out by Brigham Young with extra-wide streets designed for turning ox teams. Temple Square anchors the northwest corner, the City-County Building the east, and the Gallivan Center plaza the south end of the main commercial strip along 200 South.

The grid makes navigation simple: addresses are counted outward from Temple Square in all four directions, in increments of 100 per block. 400 South is four blocks south of Temple; 300 East is three blocks east. Once you understand this system, which covers the entire valley, you can locate any address instantly. Downtown is well served by TRAX light rail, with multiple stations along Main Street.
