Vernal Utah Temple

The Vernal Utah Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a striking white building on the western edge of downtown Vernal. Like all LDS temples, it is open only to church members in good standing, but the exterior and grounds are freely accessible and worth a look.

The building has an interesting history: it was converted from the 1907 Uintah Stake Tabernacle, an earlier religious building on the same site, and the 1990s conversion retained and reinforced the original walls. The result is a temple that looks conventional from the outside but carries an unusual architectural history. The surrounding grounds are well-maintained and the white spire is visible from much of the town.

A story
The Vernal temple is unusual among LDS temples for being converted from an existing building: the former Uintah Stake Tabernacle, which dates from 1907, was essentially gutted and rebuilt around its walls in the 1990s. This made it the first LDS temple to be repurposed from an earlier structure rather than built new — a practical compromise in a small community that couldn't justify a ground-up construction.
