Killington Ski Resort

Killington Resort is the largest ski area in the eastern United States by trail count — nearly a hundred runs across seven mountain areas, connected by lifts. Killington Peak tops out at 1,293 metres, modest by western standards but the second-highest summit in Vermont, and the vertical drop of around 900 metres makes for long runs. The mountain suits intermediates best, with the steepest terrain concentrated on Bear Mountain and the Superstar trail.

The resort has invested heavily in snowmaking infrastructure, which is why it can often open in late October when other New England areas are still waiting for natural snow. The lift system includes gondolas, fast quads, and surface lifts; the gondola up Killington Peak is the most scenic. Lift tickets are expensive by any standard; booking in advance online is significantly cheaper than buying at the window. The access road through the village fills with traffic on busy weekends — arriving early is advisable.

A story
Killington has the longest ski season in the eastern United States — its snowmaking system covers most of the mountain, and in good years it opens in October and closes in May, outlasting every other New England resort by weeks. The resort's marketing coined the nickname "The Beast of the East" in the 1970s to distinguish it from the smaller Vermont hills, and the name stuck.
