Jenne Farm

Jenne Farm sits on a hillside just outside Reading village and is justly famous: the composition of red barns, rolling pasture, maple trees, and the hills beyond is one of those landscapes that seems designed for a photograph. In October, when the maples turn and the sky goes that deep autumn blue, the farm is extraordinary.

The property is a working dairy farm on private land. Visitors are tolerated — and have been for decades — but the access is by grace. Park respectfully on the road shoulder and do not enter the farmyard. The best views are from the road below or from the hillside above. Early morning light in the first weeks of October is the classic time; by mid-morning on a sunny October weekend, you will have plenty of company with a camera.

A story
The Jenne family has farmed this land since the 18th century — the same family, the same hills, for over two hundred years. The farm achieved photographic fame gradually, without any particular marketing effort: photographers discovered it, published the images, and others followed. It is now consistently ranked among the most photographed farms in the United States, yet the Jennes still run it as a working dairy farm, which is part of the appeal.
