Reading

Small rural Vermont town of farms and schoolhouse heritage, known for photogenic hillside Jenne Farm.

Reading is a small Vermont town with a population of around 700, situated in the eastern central part of the state on Route 106 between Woodstock and Springfield. It is quiet and agricultural, with the unhurried feel of rural southern Vermont.

The main point of interest is Jenne Farm, which sits on a hillside outside town and is said to be among the most photographed farms in New England. The classic red barns set against rolling hills and autumn foliage draw photographers and painters, particularly in October. The South Reading Schoolhouse, a well-preserved 19th-century one-room school, represents the kind of rural New England heritage that Reading preserves quietly and without fuss.

Things to Do

Reading is a working agricultural town rather than a tourist destination, but it rewards those who seek it out. The drive along Route 106 through the village is pleasant, and Jenne Farm, just outside town, is one of the most photographed spots in New England. The surrounding hills are excellent for leaf-peeping in October.
