The Contrabands and Freedmen Cemetery Memorial is one of Alexandria's most important Civil War memory sites. It honours formerly enslaved people who fled to Union-occupied Alexandria, built new lives under brutal conditions, and were buried here after disease and hardship took many of them.
The memorial is quiet and powerful, with names, sculpture, and open space doing more than a large monument would. It pairs well with the Alexandria Black History Museum and makes Old Town's polished streets feel historically wider and harder.
