Lee-Fendall House

Old Town house museum tracing Alexandria families, slavery, and Civil War change

The Lee-Fendall House is one of Old Town Alexandria's better historic-house museums, especially because it does not reduce the past to polished rooms and famous surnames. Built in 1785, it was home to generations connected to the Lee family, but its interpretation also reaches into slavery, domestic labour, the Civil War, and the changing fortunes of the city.

The house sits a short walk from King Street, making it easy to add to an Old Town itinerary. It works best if you take the guided interpretation seriously: the building is attractive, but the value is in seeing how one address can carry elite family history, urban slavery, wartime disruption, and preservation politics all at once.
