The Glasshouse, just inside the entrance to Historic Jamestowne, recreates the 1608 glassworks the Virginia Company set up here in an early attempt to produce something the colony could export. Trained glassblowers demonstrate the techniques daily, producing pieces sold in the gift shop.
The recreated working furnaces sit beside the original brick foundations, which were excavated in the 1930s. The contrast — the colonists who walked away within a year and the techniques being practised again four centuries later — gives the small site real weight. Free with park admission.
