Ben Lomond Manor House

Antebellum manor that served as a Civil War field hospital

Ben Lomond is an 1830s Greek Revival plantation house in Prince William County, a short drive from Old Town Manassas. The site is managed by Prince William County and offers one of the more unusual Civil War experiences in the region: programs that engage multiple senses, recreating the sounds, smells, and sights of a 19th-century field hospital.

Unlike the battlefield park, Ben Lomond focuses on the human cost of the battles — the medical care (often brutal by modern standards), the deaths, and the personal stories of those who passed through. The living-history programs run on weekends and are worth scheduling around. Check Prince William County's historic sites calendar for current hours.

A story
After the First Battle of Manassas in July 1861, Ben Lomond was converted into a Confederate field hospital. Surgeons worked through the night in the parlors and hallways while the sounds of the retreating Union army carried across the fields. The house preserved the original medical graffiti scrawled on interior walls by soldiers — names, dates, and crude drawings — which visitors can still see today during immersive living-history programs.
