George Washington Masonic National Memorial

Towering Masonic temple modelled on the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria

A 91-metre tower looming above Old Town Alexandria, designed to resemble the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria and built by the Freemasons as a national monument to their most famous member. The building is extraordinary to look at from outside: a stepped neoclassical shaft rising from a colonnaded base, visible from across the Potomac.

Inside, the building holds a large bronze statue of Washington in Masonic regalia, Masonic artefacts and regalia from Washington's own lodge, and themed rooms on the upper floors dedicated to Masonic orders. Tours run every 30 minutes. The observation deck near the top gives a fine view over Alexandria and towards Washington. Adults around $20.
