Northern Virginia's big draws are historical — the Civil War battlefields at Manassas, George Washington's estate at Mount Vernon, and the colonial streets of Old Town Alexandria. But the area also has the Smithsonian's largest campus outside the Mall (the Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles), a string of charming small towns, and the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest on the western edge.
