The boardwalk strip and the resort area around Atlantic Avenue have the densest concentration of bars, running the gamut from open-air beach bars to hotel rooftops with bay views. The scene is heavily seasonal, peaking in summer when the city fills with vacationers and military personnel on leave. The Oceanfront bars tend toward the rowdy end of the spectrum on weekend nights; the Town Center and Hilltop areas attract a slightly older, more local crowd.
Virginia Beach has a small but genuine craft beer scene, with several breweries operating in the city and in neighboring Norfolk. The wine culture is anchored partly by Virginia's growing wine industry — the eastern shore and Piedmont vineyards produce some surprisingly good bottles, and several restaurants maintain good regional selections.
