The Millwald Theatre and Thomas J. Boyd Museum

The Thomas J. Boyd Museum occupies the historic Millwald Theatre building on Monroe Street — a 1928 picture palace with an intact façade that is itself one of the more handsome structures in Wytheville. The theatre's interior has been adapted for museum use, but enough of the original character remains to make the building worth visiting on its own terms. The marquee still stands.

The museum covers the history of Wytheville and the surrounding Wythe County through a collection of artifacts, photographs, documents, and exhibits. The range is broad: Native American prehistory, the colonial period, the Civil War (in considerable detail given the town's role), and the 20th century through to the present. The Boyd Museum functions as the community's main archive of local memory, and the quality of interpretation is better than you'd typically find in a small-town historical museum. Free or low admission; check hours before visiting, as the schedule can be limited in off-peak seasons.
