Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park

Cougar Mountain is the westernmost of the Issaquah Alps and the largest wildland park inside the Seattle metro area — over 3,000 acres of forest, ridge trails, and forgotten coal-mine ruins. The Wilderness Creek trailhead is the standard starting point, with a moderate climb up to the Wilderness Cliffs and the Long View Peak overlooks.

The trails are mostly under tree cover, so it is a good rainy-day hike. Bears and cougars are present but rarely seen; deer are common. Pack the Green Trails map — the trail system is dense and well used.

A story
Beneath the second-growth forest are over thirty miles of abandoned coal-mine tunnels and shafts. The town of Newcastle, on the western side of the mountain, was a major mining settlement in the 1880s — chain-link fences and bat-grates over old mineshafts still appear unexpectedly along the trails.
