One of those museums that sounds ridiculous until you're actually inside it — and then it's genuinely interesting. The collection runs to over 7,000 nutcrackers from 38 countries, displayed in a former retail space on the main Bavarian-themed street. The oldest pieces are functional iron implements from the 1500s; the newest include celebrity likenesses and political figures.
The museum was founded by Arlene Wagner, who started collecting nutcrackers in the 1970s and eventually ran out of shelf space at home. Admission is modest and the knowledgeable docents — often Arlene herself — are happy to talk you through the collection. Give it an hour and you'll leave knowing far more about nutcrackers than you expected to.
