Foothills Trail

A 15-mile paved rail trail that runs from south Puyallup through Orting toward the Carbon River valley, following a former railway corridor through the Puyallup River valley with views of Mount Rainier on clear days. The trail is flat and well-maintained, suitable for cycling, running, and walking. The stretch between Puyallup and Orting passes through agricultural land — daffodil fields, strawberry farms, and nurseries — with the mountain rising behind them when the weather cooperates.

The Orting end of the trail is a good destination in itself: a small town with views of Rainier that prompted geologists to designate it as one of the communities most at risk from a future lahar if the volcano becomes active. It is a curiously pleasant place despite this distinction. Bikes can be rented seasonally near the Puyallup trailhead.
