Gary Bowling's House of Art

A former schoolhouse turned multi-storey folk-art installation and Appalachian artists' gathering place.

Address 401 Princeton Ave, Bluefield, WV 24701

Three storeys of a 1909 brick schoolhouse on the south edge of downtown, packed floor-to-ceiling with paintings, sculpture, assemblage, repurposed signage, and the accumulated visual obsession of the artist Gary Bowling and his friends. It's not a museum in the polite sense — there is no plan, no labelling and no commercial intent — but a working studio, open house, and unofficial cultural centre for the southern coalfields.

Opening hours are erratic; the easiest way to visit is to call ahead or check the Facebook page. Donations are welcome and Bowling himself usually shows people around. The most unexpected and the most rewarding thing in Bluefield.

A story
Bowling, a self-taught artist and lifelong Bluefield resident, bought the derelict 1909 schoolhouse for a song in the late 1990s and has been filling it ever since with his own work, found objects, and contributions from any artist who walks in the door.
