Pinnacle Rock is a startling 30-foot-thick blade of sandstone that juts vertically from the ridge along US-52 about ten miles north of Bluefield, towering over the road. A short scramble — maybe 150 metres, with one rough section — gets you to the base of the rock; a longer trail goes round the back and on to Jimmy Lewis Lake, a small artificial lake in a forested basin behind the formation.
The park is small, free, open daylight hours, and an easy stop on a Coal Heritage Trail drive between Bluefield and Welch. Best in autumn for the colour, or on a clear winter day when the leaves are off and you can see the surrounding ridges through the bare oaks.
