Downtown Elkins is a practical mountain town centre rather than a restored stage set. The historic district has brick commercial blocks, the depot area, old industrial buildings, and the kind of main street that grew from rail traffic rather than tourism planning.
It is worth a slow walk if you are already in town. The district gives Elkins its shape: depot first, courthouse and shops nearby, then the campus and mansions rising above the valley.
