Halliehurst, the former Senator Stephen Benton Elkins House, stands on the Davis & Elkins College campus above town. The mansion is big, turreted, and unapologetically Gilded Age, a reminder that the railroads and timber business brought serious money into this valley.
The surrounding Davis and Elkins Historic District is the better experience than the house alone. Walk the campus paths and you get old stone buildings, broad lawns, and a fine view back toward the town and the Allegheny hills.
