Valley Falls State Park protects a photogenic stretch of the Tygart Valley River where water breaks over broad rock ledges. It is an easy outdoor escape from Fairmont, with trails, picnic areas, and enough river scenery to justify a few unhurried hours.
The falls are the draw, but the park is also good for a simple walk in wooded West Virginia countryside. Be cautious around wet rock and fast water; the ledges look inviting, but the river is stronger than it first appears.
