Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park

Civil War battlefield on the Gauley River canyon rim, with overlooks and short trails.

Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park is a quiet, wooded place with a sharp historical edge. The 1861 battle helped keep Confederate forces from holding this part of western Virginia, a small but real step toward the later creation of West Virginia.

The landscape does much of the work. Trails lead through the battlefield and out to Gauley River overlooks, where the canyon drops away below the trees. The Patterson House Museum adds context when open, but even outside museum hours the park is worth the drive for the river views and the sense of terrain.
