World's Largest Six-Pack

Six giant beer storage tanks painted to look like Old Style cans tower over the City Brewing Company complex on the south side of downtown. At a combined capacity of 688,200 gallons, they hold the Guinness World Record as the world's largest six-pack. The claim is legitimate — the math has been verified.

City Brewing occupies the historic Heileman brewery complex, a reminder that La Crosse was once a significant player in American brewing. The facility is one of the largest contract brewing operations in the country now, producing beers for dozens of brands. You can't tour the facility, but the outside view of the giant cans along South Third Street is free and genuinely impressive in a deeply American roadside-attraction way. It's the kind of sight that makes you glad someone thought to do it.

A story
The six tanks at City Brewing were originally built by the G. Heileman Brewing Company in 1969. Heileman, at its peak in the 1980s, was the fourth-largest brewer in the United States — La Crosse was an unlikely home for a national beer empire. The claim to "world's largest six-pack" was calculated based on actual liquid capacity: the six tanks together hold 688,200 gallons, enough to supply one person with a six-pack a day for 3,351 years.
