The Oshkosh Public Museum gives the city some useful depth beyond aviation. Its galleries cover local and regional history, including Native history, lumber, industry, immigration, and the way Oshkosh grew beside the Fox River and Lake Winnebago.
The object people remember is the Apostles Clock, an eight-foot mechanical clock built in 1895 by local craftsman Mathias Kitz. It is worth calling ahead if you are coming mainly for the clock, but even without it the museum helps explain the old wealth behind Oshkosh's grand houses.
