Oshkosh

Lake Winnebago city famous for AirVenture, aviation museums, and old Fox River industry.

Oshkosh sits on the west shore of Lake Winnebago, but its name travels much farther than the lake. To pilots, homebuilders, and anyone who loves aircraft, "Oshkosh" usually means EAA AirVenture, the huge summer fly-in that briefly turns Wittman Regional Airport into one of the busiest places in aviation.

The aviation pull is not just one week a year. The EAA Aviation Museum is a strong year-round anchor, with historic, experimental, military, and homebuilt aircraft that explain why this city matters to flying culture. Away from the airport, Oshkosh has a quieter Fox River and Lake Winnebago side, with parks, old industrial buildings, and a downtown that feels more local than polished.

The best spare-day version of Oshkosh combines the aviation museum with the Paine Art Center and Gardens, a Tudor-style estate with art galleries and formal gardens. Add the Oshkosh Public Museum or a walk in Menominee Park, and the city easily clears the bar for travelers already moving through northeast Wisconsin.
