Seven miles north of Pepin village on County Road CC, a small log cabin replica marks the spot where Laura Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7, 1867. The original cabin — the one in the "Big Woods" of Little House in the Big Woods — stood near this clearing in what was then dense hardwood forest. It burned down long ago; the current structure is a replica built in 1977.
The wayside is a simple, unhurried stop: a cabin, a historical marker, a picnic area, and the surrounding woods. There are no admission charges. The nearest town was this same Pepin of today, which Laura described in the books as the place where Pa went to trade. Coming in autumn, the surrounding maple and oak canopy makes the drive on County Road CC alone worth the detour.
The site is maintained by Pepin County. Open year-round, no fee.
