Elroy-Sparta State Trail

Historic 32-mile rail trail with limestone surface, rural scenery, trestles, and dark tunnels.

The Elroy-Sparta State Trail is Sparta's defining attraction. Opened in 1967 on a former railroad line, it helped prove that abandoned rail corridors could become long-distance recreation routes.

The ride runs 32 miles through farms, woods, limestone cuts, trestles, and three tunnels. Bring lights for the tunnels and expect a surface better suited to hybrid, touring, or gravel bikes than skinny road tires.
