Sparta

Western Wisconsin trail town calling itself the Bicycling Capital of America.

Sparta is a small western Wisconsin city with one clear identity: bikes. It sits at the end of the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, one of America's early rail-trail conversions, and leans into the role with museums, trail services, and the giant Ben Bikin' statue at the edge of town.

This is not a place to visit for urban polish. It is a practical trail base with a few good quirks: a space-and-bicycle museum, a downtown soda fountain, and a strange fiberglass mold graveyard just outside town.

Sparta is most rewarding if you arrive with a bike, or if you are following the Driftless Region's back roads and want an odd, friendly stop between La Crosse and Tomah.
