The Dells of the Wisconsin River are the reason the town exists as a destination. The river cuts through Cambrian sandstone, forming cliffs, narrow channels, side canyons, and pine-covered ledges.
Public access is patchy, and many of the best views are easiest from the water. A boat tour is the simplest way to see why 19th-century travellers started coming here before the water parks existed.
