Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin River resort town where sandstone gorges meet the Midwest's biggest concentration of water parks.

Wisconsin Dells is a small city with an outsized tourist industry, about an hour north of Madison. The original reason to come was the Dells of the Wisconsin River: narrow sandstone gorges, pine-topped cliffs, and strange rock formations that early photographers turned into a national curiosity.

That landscape is still the best part of the trip. Boat tours on the Upper Dells reach Witches Gulch and Stand Rock, while the duck tours add a deliberately silly but classic land-and-water ride through the river country.

The modern Dells is louder: water parks, mini-golf, go-karts, fudge shops, arcades, and family resorts along Wisconsin Dells Parkway. It can feel overbuilt, especially in summer, but it has a clear identity and enough real anchors to justify a stop. If you want quiet geology, go early or outside peak season. If you want family chaos, this is the place.
