The Snake River flows through the floor of Jackson Hole for about 80 km before entering the canyon to the south, and floating it is one of the most pleasant ways to experience the valley. Several sections are available, from flat calm floats (ideal for wildlife watching and photography) to the more animated whitewater of Snake River Canyon to the south.
The most popular option is the 16-km scenic float from Deadman's Bar to Moose — a 3-4 hour trip through cottonwood gallery forest with the Teton peaks as backdrop. Moose, bald eagles, ospreys, and river otters are commonly seen along this stretch. Outfitters in Jackson offer guided float trips with wildlife-focused commentary; some combine the float with a picnic or a short hike. The whitewater canyon section (rated Class III–IV) is more suitable for people who want the water to be lively rather than calm.
